A confessional

A confessional

The confessional, as known, is typical niche, usually wood, in which the priests gather the confessions of faithful in Catholic churches.

Unlike what you might think, its introduction in churches is relatively recent: fu San Carlo Borromeo (1538-1584), in the middle of the sixteenth century, to request its use and to promote it throughout the diocese of Milan.

Not only: in the text on construction and on vessels and furnishings Ecclesiastical Instructions (1577), Borromeo he also established the appearance, that of a niche separate into two distinct parts, one for the priest and the penitent, bounded by a door, as still occurs.

Prior to the insertion of the confessional in places of worship, confessions were held in homes or in canonical (Photo gives: mondodelbelli.blogspot.it).
